ROCKEFELLER TREE LIGHTING - DEC. 3 AT 8:00 PM
I thought I'd give you a little bit of history on the tree. The
first tree was put up in 1931 during the Great Depression on
Christmas Eve by some construction workers on a muddy site.
This site later became known as the Rockefeller Center. In 1933
a publicist organized the first tree lighting ceremony and the first
televised lighting was in 1951. It was televisded on The Kate
Smith Show on NBC.
Throughout history innumerable clebrities lit the tree and had a
beautiful Christmas program along with it. A few years ago Fergie
unveiled a 550 pound Swaroviski Star composed of 25,000 crystals.
The largest star to top the tree.
Two of the tallest trees were 65' and 72' but this year the tree is 85'
tall. The tree is 90 years old and weighs approximately 13 tons.
This 82nd annual year of The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting
Ceremony will be hosted by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. Some of
the celebrities appearing will be Cindy Lauper, Seth McFarlane,
LeAnn Rimes and Idina Menzel.
